【HKIBIM Awards 2020】
GVDC and one of Yau Lee’s construction projects “Long Span Footbridge connecting Hoi Ying Estate and Hoi Tat Estate” have won the Gold Award of BIM Organisations - BIM Consultants / Software developers / Vendors Category and the Merit Award of BIM Projects - Government Projects Category respectively.

The 145-metre-wide long Span footbridge across the West Kowloon Highway and Lin Cheung Road includes 16 traffic lanes with also MTR Tung Chung Line, Airport Express Line and West Rail Line. Using a traditional construction method would need to erect a temporary support frame in the middle of the span before installing the footbridge step by step. Such installation would indeed be quite risky while different road sections would require closure for several times. Therefore, we decided to adopt two innovative methods, including “Lowering Construction Method” and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA).

This is the very first time to adopt such innovative methods for bridge installation in Hong Kong. We need to divide the footbridge into two parts and use the steel wires at two ends for the pushing and pulling of the footbridge to the final position. This method only required one-off Route 3 suspension. Since a thorough design and a high degree of accuracy at each construction stage are very important in adopting the Lowering Construction Method, BIM and 3D Laser Scanning were used to control the construction size and making sure the installation has met all designs and standards.
