Research Paper on Blockchain Technology in MiC Selected as MDPI Editor's Choice 2025
A research paper titled “Towards a Conceptual Framework of Using Technology to Support Smart Construction: The Case of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC),” published by Dr. Rosana Wong in 2023, has been honored as an MDPI Editor’s Choice. This recognition underscores the paper's significant contributions to the field of construction technology, particularly in the application of blockchain through a self-developed platform called BEANiE for the full lifecycle management of building. This approach can improve sustainability and increase the adaptability of construction practices towards lean construction and just-in-time delivery.

In 2018, Global Virtual Design and Construction Limited and VHSoft Technologies Limited, two subsidiaries of Yau Lee Group and Rosana’s startup, iC-full Security Management Limited, to develop Hong Kong’s first BIM-enabled blockchain multifunctional platform, BEANiE, in response to the wide adoption of MiC in Hong Kong since 2019. BEANiE has advanced to version 6.0 and was implemented in 22 MiC projects over the past 5 years. BEANiE is a breakthrough technology in Hong Kong, if not the world. Rosana recalled that there were no similar applications in the US when she delivered presentations at Stanford University and MiT in May 2019.

Rosana expressed her gratitude to MDPI for the recognition, believing that the integration of blockchain and other smart technologies within prefabrication and MiC is a right strategic move to enhance not only the buildability and quality of the Group’s construction projects but also the environmental, social, and economic advantages for Hong Kong and the world as a whole.

The full paper is available for access on the MDPI website, offering valuable insights and exchange for researchers, industry professionals, and stakeholders interested in the future of construction technology.
