Under the government's "Market Modernization Program," Lai Wan Market, which has been in operation for 30 years, has completed its reconstruction in which Yau Lee Construction was responsible for strengthening the detailed design based on the design intent provided by the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD) and the reconstruction. This is Hong Kong’s first market under the flyover adopted MiC and the project was completed in just 10 months. MiC modules were designed according to the specific needs of different types of stalls which could enhance operational efficiency and space utilization. Lai Wan Market will soft launch tomorrow (2/2) to allow the public to check in and shop for the Lunar New Year in a more comfortable and well-equipped environment.
The overall design of the market is in a colourful and modern concept. The integration of lighting fixtures and ceilings creates a bright and spacious environment. Together with the redesigned ventilation system and sewage system, the cramped and damp image of the old market was eliminated. In addition, the market has been reorganized into different zones with clear and creative signage for the convenience of the tenants and the public. The widened pathways also allow strollers and wheelchairs to pass smoothly. Moreover, the MiC cum DfMA restrooms feature family-friendly facilities and multifunctional one-stop provision of wash band basin. All these enhancements can definitely provide a caring and inclusive market for all generations in the district.
The reconstructed Lai Wan Market will become a popular gathering place for the community. Therefore, the ArchSD has incorporated many thoughtful ideas blending practicality into their design intent to enhance the market’s social function, for example, resting areas are combined with the walls and the dual-façade design of the exterior of the market allows the public to read different messages from two directions.
Rosana, Deputy Chair of Yau Lee Group, and the project team has visited the market with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, District Council Members and Resident Representatives this morning. One of the visitors who lives in Mei Foo for more than 54 years thanks the government and the project team for bringing a new market with good ventilation, improved light and fresh air.
Lai Wan Market is one of the few public markets under the flyover in Hong Kong. In fact, there are more than 2000 flyovers in Hong Kong. Rosana looks forward to ultilizing unused spaces beneath the flyover, such as the early “Energizing Kowloon East – Fly the Flyover Operation”, to provide the community more common spaces with the aim of enhancing citizens’ happiness and strengthening social connection.
